From 8 years of unemployment to working within 8 weeks of mentoring, find out how LEMIS+ helped David lay the foundations to secure a job in construction.
David was looking to re-enter the workforce but was unsure of his options or how to put existing skills to use. Previously a semi-skilled scaffolder, he spoke to someone at his local Jobs and Benefits Office about getting back into employment and was referred to the free training and employment mentoring provided by the LEMIS+ Project.
David’s journey back into work began when he phoned the East Belfast Mission and was matched with a mentor who was able to uncover skills, experience and interests – bringing him to a place where he was able to make the decision that the training included in the Warehousing Academy was best suited to his career direction.
The LEMIS+ Warehousing Academy includes modules such as Forklift License, Manual Handling and Health and Safety and provides participants with additional employment options.
With his mentor’s support and advice, an Action Plan was completed and goals were agreed upon to assist David in finding meaningful employment.
David’s goals included:
Updating his CV – showcasing existing skills and experience as well as advertising the new warehousing training.
Attending mentoring sessions to focus on job searching and application completion.
After six weeks, an opportunity through the Belfast City Council presented itself and David was in a place where he was confident to apply. The City Council’s pre-employment training opportunity aimed to provide participants with the necessary experience to gain employment within the Council’s recycling centres. However, during the training another opportunity more suited to David became available with McAleer & Rushe
With a background in construction, David was extremely interested in rejoining a building environment and after sending the employer a CV, which included his recent training, he was invited to attend an interview.
…within 24 hours of interview, David was offered a job as a General Labourer.
